The story of Love, Romance & Chocolate is set around the beautiful country of Belgium. Thus in order to refrain from shooting the movie in Canada, like most other Hallmark films, Jonathan thought of shooting on location.

The director wanted to experiment with shooting around a beautiful European country. So, after the production budget was reviewed and the suitable cast members were selected, the director began looking for filming locations.

Jonathan, along with 5 other members from the unit, visited Belgium in person to select the ideal shooting locations for Love, Romance & Chocolate. After several weeks, the director and his team selected a number of picturesque sites around this beautiful European country and prepared to begin shooting. 

The principal photography began in the summer of 2019 and lasted for one and a half months or so. Important to mention that, the majority of the sequences were shot around the capital of Belgium in Brussels. Some portions of the movie were also filmed in the city of Brugge as well.

The filming schedule, thankfully, remained as planned. As the production members had to travel overseas for shooting, all necessary permissions were acquired in advance. The logistics too were transported early, way before the principal photography began. 

This was majorly done to ensure, no unprecedented circumstances arise in Belgium, during the course of the shooting. To be honest, the production members did take care of that, by following the instructions given by Jonathan.

Brussels, Belgium | Europe

The three official languages, which are spoken in Belgium, are French, German, and Dutch. Thanks to half of the production members being well-versed in German and French, arranging properties from the Belgian owners for shooting, was a cakewalk for the team.

So, in the opening sequence of the movie, where we see the character of Emma, arriving in Belgium for the first time, was actually filmed outside of Brussels Zaventem Airport. The shooting permissions which were acquired in advance, enabled the production members to begin shooting in Brussels, after the team arrived.

Other pivotal sequences of the film where see the female lead character boarding a classic European-styled hotel in Brussels, were captured inside a famous hotel located near Grand Palace.

Additional outdoor sequences of the movie were shot around St Michael and St Gudula Cathedral in Brussels. The production members then moved to the final shooting location in Belgium and filmed the remaining sequences.

Brugge, Belgium | Europe

The sequences of the film, where we see the chocolate workshop of Mr. Luc Prevost, was actually shot inside a famous eatery in Belgium. The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of the eatery, which was located near Burg Square in Brugge.

The interior sequence depicting the entire process of chocolate making was then filmed inside the same facility.

Filming in Belgium lasted for one and a half months, after which the production members returned to America, and captured the remaining interior scenes inside a well-equipped studio.

The basic premise of Love, Romance & Chocolate revolves around the character of Emma, an American girl who visits Belgium all by herself. At the beginning of the film, the character of Emma gets dumped by her cheating boyfriend, who promised her a romantic trip to Belgium.

As the story progresses further, the female lead pushes herself out of the rut and decides to travel solo. But after she reaches Belgium, surprisingly enough, she ends up falling in love with a handsome Belgian chocolatier.
