In other words, the director always paid special attention to choosing the best filming locations in and around America, to showcase the perfect backdrop for his movies. So during the initial stages of production, Reiner had set up a team and sent them to scout for untapped potential shooting sites.

Soon, a number of places in Oregon were scouted and Reiner decided to forward with them, except he only added a handful of locations in California, later to the same list. The principal photography for Stand By Me began in August 1985 and was completed within two months or less. The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the lead character, reminiscing the golden days of his childhood, was actually filmed in the state of California. Specifically, in the unincorporated town of Burney located in Shasta County. The production members used a rustic bridge or better known as the trestle bridge situated near Eagle Mountain Ln, to capture the opening outdoor sequence of the film.

Other major sequences in California, were captured in and around the town of McCloud. This sparsely populated town located in Siskiyou County was primarily used to capture the breathtaking background of the snow-peaked mountains. Almost all pivotal outdoor sequences from the first quarter of the movie were shot here, after which the production members moved to the next filming location.

Oregon, USA

So after capturing some jaw-dropping beautiful sequences in parts of California, the production members arrived in the city of Cottage Grove in Oregon. The filming crew captured several exterior shots of this beautiful city and later used it to depict the scenes of Wisconsin in the film. However, the majority of the sequence of the second half of Stand By Me, featuring the actual adventure of the boys, was filmed in the city of Brownsville.

Pivotal outdoor sequences showcasing the Treehouse and Gordie Lachance’s house were captured in School Ave and 325 Fisher St in Brownsville, respectively. A handful of other sequences were filmed here, and then the production members moved to the city of Veneta and captured the scenes of the final sequence. The scene featuring the Castle Rock Salvage in the film was also shot here at 25850 Tidball Ln. The filming crew then returned to California for the promotion of the movie.
