Thus, during the initial stages of pre-production, director Donaldson began looking for idyllic filming locations within America, to depict the fictional town of Dante in the movie. A number of locations were scouted in and around the states of Idaho, Washington and California. 

Donaldson then selected a few locations and instructed the crew to begin shooting. The principal photography commenced in the second week of May 1996 and took several weeks to complete. The production members filmed till the first week of August, of the same year and then began working on the promotion of the film.

Important to mention that, the filming schedule got delayed, for a number of reasons. The makers decided to film the establishing scenes of the movie in Washington. Several exterior shots of Mount St. Helens were captured by the crew. The production members used special helicopters fitted with high-definition cameras to shoot the top view of the volcanic mountains. 

Other pivotal sequences in Washington were captured inside Mt. Baker National Forests. The filming crew had to acquire shooting permission from the local administrative office of the Forest. Special lighting equipment was used to capture the gripping scenes of the forest during the night.

Filming lasted for three weeks or so in Washington, after which the production member moved to the next filming location and captured the remaining sequences.

The majority of the scenes depicting the fictional town Dante shown in the movie were actually captured in and around the city of Wallace. This beautiful city is located in the northeastern region of Idaho and is considered the county seat of Shoshone County.

So, the filming crew captured several exterior shots in various parts of this small yet beautiful city to depict the breathtaking outdoor scenes of the fictional town shown in the movie. Filming in Idaho lasted till the second week of July 1996, after which the production members returned back to California.

Thus, in order to capture interior sequences of Dalton’s home, the production members used the Santa Clarita Studios, located at 25135 Anza Drive, Santa Clarita. The filming crew constructed the make-believe home of Dalton from scratch and then captured the interior shots of his house.

However, other pivotal interior sequences showcasing the office of the volcanologist were captured inside Universal Studios. This famous studio, located at 100 Universal City Plaza, was also used to recreate the scenes of the volcanic eruption. Shooting in California continued till the first week of August 1996, the crew then began working on post-production.
