Where Was The Covenant Filmed? Let’s Know This Horror Thriller Flick Closely!

The story of The Covenant is set in Essex County, Massachusetts. But, in reality, the shooting of this film took place in Canada entirely. To be more specific, the director thought of shooting the majority of the outdoor scenes in and around the province of Nova Scotia. Whereas the rest of the creative heads reached a mutual agreement to film the remaining scenes in and around Quebec. But the team didn’t arrive at this decision right away. Initially, the production heads of The Covenant were hoping to shoot the movie in California.

But, after the production members couldn’t find any suitable shooting locations in California, they were instructed to explore other options. A couple of weeks later, the filming crew identified a few potential filming locations in and around North Carolina. Renny Harlin was almost convinced with the overall backdrop of the scouting locations in North Carolina. But, right before the crew was about to begin shooting around this state, a major incident forced them to back out at the eleventh hour.

Later, Renny arranged a special meeting with other production members and decided to shoot all scenes of his film in and around Canada. The principal photography of The Covenant began in the first week of September 2005 and continued until the final week of November of the same year. Since the weather conditions were pretty harsh in Canada, the production members had to take a lot of precautions before filming the outdoor scenes.

During the entire course of 2 and a half months, the production members had to travel back and forth between Nova Scotia and Quebec. The majority of the outdoor shots were filmed in Nova Scotia, whereas the interior sequences of the movie were filmed in Quebec City. Apart from the extremely cold weather, the production members didn’t face any other issues while filming in Canada. The crew made sure to acquire the shooting permits well in advance. After the shooting process was over, the production members returned to America and began working on the promotion of the film.

Let us now discuss in detail where was The Covenant filmed. Later, I’ll share other intriguing details of this film and also walk you through the plot.

Nova Scotia | Canada

The province of Nova Scotia is located in the eastern region of Canada. This beautiful place lies in the Maritime Region 1 of Canada’s 4 coastal provinces. The majority of the outdoor shots of The Covenant were filmed in and around this province. The opening scene of the film, where we see the lead characters for the first time, was filmed in Lunenburg. The production members used a medium-sized apartment to depict the lead actor’s residence in the New England area.

The port town of Nova Scotia is located in the southern region of Nova Scotia. Apart from the opening scene of the film, the majority of the outdoor shots were captured near Cumberland St. and Cornwallis St. After these sequences were shot, the production members moved to the next filming location.

Quebec | Canada

The remaining scenes of The Covenant were filmed in and around Quebec City. The sequences depicting the paranormal research center in the movie were actually filmed in this iconic Canadian city. The production members used a commercial building located on the outskirts of Quebec to depict the original headquarters of the ghost hunters. The final phase of shooting was done in  Lennoxville, Quebec.

The production members took special shooting permission from the authorities of Bishop’s University to film the ending scene. By the final week of November 2005, the entire shooting process of The Covenant was over. So, these were the filming locations of The Covenant. I’ll now walk you through the plot of this movie.
